Vaginoplasty
Also referred to as vaginal rejuvenation or vaginal tightening, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to tighten the inside of the vaginal canal and the vaginal opening for women who have vaginal relaxation.
Vaginal Relaxation is mostly caused by damages to the vaginal wall and muscle during vaginal child birth because of large baby and difficult or repeated deliveries. The result is a relaxed vaginal canal and a large vaginal opening. Women who experience these problems often report:
- Feeling too loose, feeling stretched out, not being able to feel their partner inside them
- Diminished sensation or friction during intercourse for both them and their partners
- Having a difficult time achieving orgasm during intercourse (which may or may not be related to vaginal relaxation)
- Recurrent vaginal and bladder infections or excessive vaginal discharge
For these women there can be significant symptoms that effect their confidence and quality of life. While healthy living, Kegel exercises, and physical therapy can help, most of the vaginal relaxation involves permanent damage to pelvic support ligaments that cannot be corrected without surgery. By restoring the natural architecture and physiologic state of the vaginal tissues women are expected to regain better tone and strength which will lead to improved sensation during intercourse.

Vaginoplasty is the most common cosmetic gynecology procedure requested by our patients. Women generally seek vaginal rejuvenation for two reasons:
- to resolve the symptoms related to pelvic relaxation
- to enhance or improve sexual function
Perineoplasty
This surgery involves reconstructing the perineal body and its underlying muscular support tissues. The perineal body is the area of the body from just beneath the entrance to the vagina extending down toward the rectum. This area is most commonly injured from an episiotomy or tear during delivery. By combining the Perineoplasty with the Vaginoplasty we can effectively reduce the diameter of the entrance to the vagina as well as reduce the diameter of the inside of the vagina.
In some cases, there may be more extensive damage to the vaginal walls and support tissues. This can affect the support of the pelvic organs; including the uterus, bladder and rectum. Do you experience any of these symptoms:
- A feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvic area
- A feeling that something is falling out of the vagina
- Low back pain
- Has to manually express stool
- Leaking of urine with laughing, coughing, sneezing, exercising or sex
If this is the case, these issues can be addressed with complete Pelvic Reconstruction and Anti-incontinence procedures at the same time when vaginoplasty is done.
Along with vaginal rejuvenation, some women desire labiaplasty (labia reduction surgery) and/or hymenoplasty or reduction of excess Prepuce at the same time. That can be easily accommodated.
Vaginoplasty and Labiaplasty can be performed either in the office under local anesthesia, or in the hospital under general anesthesia together with pelvic reconstruction surgeries for pelvic prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.
When is the best time to have a Vaginoplasty performed?
It is recommended that a woman wait until she has completed her childbearing before undergoing a Vaginoplasty and Perineoplasty, or any other Pelvic Reconstruction and Anti-incontinence procedures.
